Travelling with your pet is an unforgettable experience. The memories you create with your furry friend are truly cherishable. However, to make the dream of travelling with a pet come true, you need to prepare well in advance.

While planning a journey, you must see if the airline you are considering allows pets. One of the popular names that accommodate pets on planes is Emirates. While the airline is pet-friendly globally, you must know its policies.

Before booking tickets for yourself and your little one, have you checked if you comply with all terms and conditions?

If you are not aware of the Emirate’s pet policies, then don’t worry. In this blog, we will discuss all the conditions laid out by Emirates regarding pet travel.

So buckle up as we are going to explore the terms and conditions of the UAE-based airline.

Pet Policies of Emirates Airlines

  1. Pets Travel in Cabin: Pets are usually not allowed in the cabin except for guide dogs for blind people.
  2. Pets Travelling as Excess Baggage: In a few cases, you can take your pets as excess baggage. However, in these cases, the airlines won’t consider your pet as excess baggage:
    • If your flight is longer than 17 hours
    • You are travelling with multiple pets
    • The crate is too big
    • Import policy doesn’t allow pets as excess baggage
  3. Cargo Requirements:
    • While opting for the excess baggage option, you should ensure that the crate you choose is IATA-accredited.
    • For pets travelling as excess baggage, the size of the cargo should not be more than 300cm.
  4. Types of Pets Allowed: Emirates poses no restriction on the number of pets that can accompany you in your travel as long as you follow their policies. Dogs, cats, pet birds and falcons can travel as excess baggage. The age of the dog and cats should be above 4 months. If you want to travel with any other breed apart from these, then you may have to choose the cargo option. However, in cargo choice, too, some animals are completely prohibited. Here is a list of animals that you cannot travel in with Emirates:
    • Banned Dog Breeds: The dogs prohibited by Emirates include Boston Terrier, Boxer, Brussels Griffon, Bullmastiff, Chihuahua (Apple Headed), Chow Chow, Dogo Argentino, Dogue de Bordeaux, English and French Bulldogs, Japanese Chin, Lhasa Apso, Lowchen, Neapolitan Mastiff, Pekinese, Pit Bull Terrier, Pub (all types), Shar-Pei, Shih Tzu, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Tibetan Spaniel, Newfoundland, Bulldog (all types), Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and American Cocker Spaniel.
    • Banned Cat Breeds: The cat breeds prohibited by Emirates include British Shorthair, Burmese, Exotic Fold, Hamalayan, Scottish Fold Burmese, Exotic Shorthair, and Persian.
    • Other Animals: Animals except cats, dogs, pet birds and falcons travel as unaccompanied pets. Emirates allows warm-blooded animals except poisonous reptiles and insects. Animals that leave a bad odour, such as skunks or minks, are also not allowed. You can transport goats and sheep but in limited numbers.
  5. Health and Vaccination Certificates:
    • The airlines ask for a health certificate from a licensed veterinarian, which should be issued within 10 days of travel. The certificate should state that your pet is free from any infection or disease and is fit to travel.
    • Some countries demand additional documents such as vaccination certificates, quarantine periods, and treatments for allowing pets to travel. So make sure to check the paperwork requirements of the particular country you decide to travel to.
  6. Temperature Restrictions and Precautions: Travelling with pets requires more safety to maintain their health. Emirates, considering the safety of animals, restricts pet travel during extreme weather conditions. So, while travelling with your pet, be sure to contact your local Emirates for weather-related restrictions. Also, by choosing a well-ventilated crate, you can ensure that your little one travels without any discomfort.
  7. Pet Travel Insurance: While travelling with a pet, it is better to get insurance. With insurance, you don’t need to worry about veterinary expenses that may occur due to unexpected illness or injury in your pet. You can contact Emirates Airlines for more information on the procedure for getting pet travel insurance.

Conclusion: By adhering to the Emirate’s pet policies, you can ensure hassle-free travel with your pets. However, if you find preparing all the documents for your pet overwhelming, then don’t worry.
